The Sarus Protection Society (SPS) was registered on 18th May, 2006 under Society Registration Act 1860.
Main objective of the Society are:
- To study the ecology of sarus crane in Uttar Pradesh.
- To develop and conduct research in sarus crane biology, habitat management, and human aspects of sarus crane conservation.
- To study the sarus crane habitat vis a vis wetlands
- To study the population trend of the species in the area, threats to the survival of the population of the species and wetlands that support it.
- To prepare an action plan for the protection of sarus cranes and its habitat and execute it or get it executed through any competent agency or agencies.
- To study the scope of involvement of local communities and institutions as well as the participatory approach for conservation of sarus cranes and its habitat in the selected study area.
- To collaborate with and help selected educational institutions and research establishment to set up a facility for research and training on habitat and biology of sarus crane.
- To promote applied research of direct relevance to the management of sarus crane in its habitat.
- To assist, institute and carry out research project related to sarus crane and environmental aspects of natural ecosystems of sarus crane.
- To set up centre of excellence with field stations and laboratory where necessary for achieving above mentioned objectives.
- To create a data bank on Indian sarus crane ecosystems and a network for dissemination of research results to the centre, states and the union territories.
- To develop consultancy service and to provide advice to Central and State Government as well as public and private sector organizations, as and when required regarding the habitat management of sarus crane.
- To institute and award research grants, fellowships, scholarships, prizes, awards, and medals in accordance with the rules and regulations or bylaws of the society.
- To raise, accept and expand funds for all or any purposes of the society consistent with its objectives and to deposit all such money in nationalized banks or to invest them as may be required.
- To seek financial grants and guidelines from state government when required for the furtherance of the objectives of the society.
